1993 fake encounter case: Justice received after 32 years, 5 policemen convicted in fake encounter case of 7 people

A CBI court in Mohali has convicted five retired Punjab Police officials including a former Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) for being involved in two fake encounters in Taran Taran district in 1993. Those who have been convicted include former Deputy Superintendent of Police Bhupinderjit Singh (who later retired from the post of SSP), former Assistant Sub-Inspector Davinder Singh (who retired from the post of DSP), former Assistant Sub-Inspector Gulberg Singh, former Inspector Suba Singh and former ASI Raghbir Singh.

Seven people from Rani Vallah village, including four special police officers (SPOs), were illegally picked up, tortured and murdered by the police. These officers were found guilty of criminal conspiracy, murder, destroying evidence and rigging in records under the relevant sections of IPC. After the verdict, he was taken into custody and will be sentenced soon.

The CBI investigation revealed that a police team led by the then station house officer of Sarhali police station had detained two others from the house of a government contractor on June 27, 1993 from the house of a government contractor, Shinder Singh, Desa Singh, Sukhdev Singh and Balakar Singh and two others named Balajit Singh. CBI investigation revealed that these people were trapped in a false case of robbery. Subsequently, on July 2, 1993, Sarhali police registered a case against Shinder Singh, Desa Singh and Sukhdev Singh for absconding with government weapons.
