UCC impact in Uttarakhand: Marriage registration increases, CM Dhami appreciated

After the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttarakhand on 27 January 2025, a historic increase in marriage registration has been recorded. A total of 3,01,526 marriages have been registered under the UCC Act so far.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said on Saturday that marriage registration under the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is steadily increasing. He said that the UCC law not only makes the society legally more organized, but is also a decisive step towards protecting women’s rights and protecting their interests. A press release by Uttarakhand CMO states that every registration under UCC is a symbol of social empowerment of the state.

After the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttarakhand on 27 January 2025, a historic increase in marriage registration has been recorded. A total of 3,01,526 marriages have been registered under the UCC Act so far. This number is an average of 1,634 marriage registration per day, which is many times more than the previous system. It is noteworthy that a total of 3,30,064 marriages were registered under the Uttarakhand Marriage Registration Act 2010 from the year 2010 to 26 January 2025 before the UCC was implemented, which was an average of 67 per day.

The process of marriage registration has become more simple, transparent and effective with the implementation of uniform civil code. As a result, enthusiasm is being seen among the citizens regarding marriage registration. Keeping in mind the convenience of the citizens, the state government has increased the deadline of marriage registration under the Uniform Civil Code from a predetermined 6 months to 1 year. Notification has been issued by the Department of Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs in this regard.
