The security of Hagia Sophia has now been handed over to the state -of -the -art Artificial Intelligence (AI) based system, standing up to 15 centuries of Turki and three times in history. Originally converted into a mosque after the conquest of Istanbul, Hagia Sophia was rebuilt as a museum in 1934 by an order from the Council of Ministers. After a gap of 86 years, it was reopened for worship on July 10, 2020 as a mosque by the President’s order. Since then, extensive efforts have been made to preserve its historical fabric and strengthen security through the use of modern technology and AI applications.

This world-renowned building, older than the year, still attract millions of tourists as architecture and religious-cultural heritage. The Turki government launched the AI security project to strengthen security and mob management. On an average, more than 35 million tourists reach Hagia Sophia every year. Everyday there is a crowd of 10,000 tourists. Maintaining security in this crowd, saving heritage from damage had become the priority of the government.

From face recognition to crowd control advance AI
The project, which started at a cost of Rs 19 crore, is not only to ensure security, but also to protect heritage and give better experience to visitors. Hagia Sophia Grand Masjid has now installed 360-degree cameras, sensor-based entrances and a live monitoring desk. Which will reduce human intervention. The AI project includes techniques such as face recognition, identity of suspicious activities, mob control and emergency response systems.
