Question on the safety of women
Political reactions across the state have intensified on this incident. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Manjhi has said that he is ‘extremely sad’ from Puri incident and will pray to Lord Jagannath for the earliest girl to recover.
The opposition party Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has launched a scathing attack on the BJP -led state government. Former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has said that the incident took place within a week of the Balasore tragedy (probably any other recent incident, because the Balasore train tragedy is not being talked about) within a week.
Targeting the government, Patnaik said, ‘Such unimaginable incidents against women are now coming out almost daily in the whole of Odisha. These are not sporadic cases of violence. These incidents with shocking regularity point to the deep systemic failure of the government. This indicates that the criminals have been elevated under the rule of the present government and they have no concern for getting punished. This shows how insecure Odisha is becoming for women due to government inaction and political patronage.
He questioned, ‘Will the Odisha government wake up from this deep sleep and take prompt action to arrest criminals? And even more importantly, will the government take any steps to prevent recurrence of such incidents? Odisha girls and women are waiting for the answer. The police has intensified the investigation in the case and the search for the culprits is going on. Demand for justice is arising in the entire state regarding this heinous crime.
