American senator and Democratic Party member Richard Bluemethal has publicly supported the bill involving new restrictions on Russia. This proposed law recommends imposing tariffs of up to 500% on countries like India, which buy oil, natural gas and petroleum products from Russia. Bluemethal said in a video message from Rome-“I have just returned to meet the leaders of European countries. They are showing inspiring commitment in support of Ukraine’s freedom and are also grateful for this Russia Ban Bill of America, in which China and India have been punished ‘bone’, as these countries are giving strength to their war machine by buying Russian oil.”

The bill was introduced in the US Senate in April. Now it is getting more attention as former US President Donald Trump has also described it as seriously under consideration to bring Russia to the conversation table to end the Ukraine war. Although a bilateral trade agreement is currently under talks between India and the US, this new proposal has become a cause of concern. According to Prerna Dwarna, Deputy Director of Ananta Easpan Center: “This bill is worrying because the restrictions imposed by the US Congress can also beat existing trade agreements. If this bill passes, American trade representatives will not have the power to postpone it.”

He further said that, “Although the bill has been found in 84 co–professors in the Senate, it has only got the support of 33 in the House of Representatives. The fight for India is yet to be contacted. Our diplomats will have to contact representatives who are currently not present in Washington.” According to US media reports, the bill empowers the US President (especially Trump if again comes to power) to suspend the provisions of this bill for select countries with a discount of six months twice.
The Government of India has also reacted to this issue. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said that the Indian Embassy at Washington DC has clearly approached Senator Lindsay Graham and has clearly put its side on India’s energy security.
