Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday described himself as innocent in a defamation case related to his remarks on Hindutva thinker Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. His lawyer Milind Pawar filed this petition in a Pune court as Rahul Gandhi himself was not present during the proceedings. The case was heard before Judicial Magistrate (First Class) and Special Judge (MP/MLA Court) Amol Shriram Shinde. Speaking on the matter, Sangram Kolhatkar, a lawyer of complainant Satyaki Savarkar, confirmed that the phase of filing the petition of the accused had been completed. Advocate Sangram Kolhatkar, who is representing Satyaki Savarkar, said that since the phase of registering the petition of the accused has been completed, the hearing of the case will now move forward. The court has set the next hearing of the case for July 24.

What is the matter?
The case stems from a speech given by Gandhiji in London in which he criticized Savarkar’s works and ideology. During the speech, Gandhiji said, “He (Savarkar and his friends) beat and happy a Muslim. If five people beat a person and are happy, it is cowardice. Fifteen people are beating a person with Savarkarji. It is also in his ideology.
