Maharashtra Minister Yogesh Kadam said on Wednesday that it is mandatory to speak Marathi in the state and warned that any disrespect towards the language would invite legal results. This statement of Yogesh Kadam comes after the viral video in which a food stall owner in Thane is being beaten for refusing to talk in Marathi. Yogesh Kadam told reporters that you have to speak Marathi in Maharashtra. If you do not know Marathi, then your attitude should not be that you will not speak Marathi.

The incident occurred in Bhayandar area on Tuesday evening and after a video went viral, there was widespread outrage. In the footage, many people – some of whom are wearing scarves with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) symbol – are seen clapping and attacking him, as he failed to respond in Marathi when he was allegedly asked.

While buying food, one of them asked the stall owner to talk in Marathi, which he questioned him. This angered the person and shouted at the stall owner. A police officer said that some other people present with the person also joined him and slapped the stall owner. Based on the complaint of the stall owner, the Kashmiri police lodged an FIR against the persons under various sections of the Indian Justice Code and the case is being investigated.
