AIPEF, an organization of engineers, said on Wednesday that more than 27 lakh electricity sector employees will go on a nationwide strike on July 9 against the government’s move to privatize two discoms in Uttar Pradesh. All India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF) President Shailendra Dubey said that the incident took place at a time when the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to privatize Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam (PVVNL) and Dakshinchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (DVVNL), which cover 42 of the 75 districts in the state.

Extensive protest against privatization of discom
He said that on the call of the National Electricity Employees and Engineer Coordination Committee (NCCOEE), electricity workers, junior engineers and engineers across the country have organized extensive protests against the privatization of discom. Dubey said that it has been decided to protest against 27 lakh power workers on July 9 against the privatization of two discoms of UP. He said that power supply in the country can also be affected by such a large scale strike. He said that if power supply is affected, we will not be responsible for this. Dubey alleged that Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited and some big officials of the government are colluding with selected private houses. They want to sell the assets of DISCOM worth millions of crores of rupees at a quarter to one price.

Farmers will be deprived of benefits when the discom is privatized. He said that farmers and poor people will be deprived of many benefits when the discom is privatized. Demonstrations will be held mainly in Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram, Vijayawada, Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, Nagpur, Raipur, Bhopal, Jabalpur, Vadodara, Rajkot, Guwahati, Shillong, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, Patna, Ranchi, Srinagar, Jammu, Shimla, Dehradun, Patiala, Jaipur, Kota and Lucknow.
