Pakistan government will increase water storage capacity: Shahbaz Sharif

Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said that his government has decided to increase water storage capacity amidst India being postponed by India.

A day after the terrorist attack on 22 April in Pahalgam, India took several punitive steps against Pakistan, including postponing the 1960 Indus Water Treaty.

Pakistan’s agriculture is largely dependent on the Indus, Jhelum and Chenab rivers and any attempt to turn the direction of water or even to stop it temporarily can be disastrous for the country.

Government news agency ‘Associated Press of Pakistan’ said that Sharif on Tuesday spoke on the water problem during the tour of the National Emergency Operations Center.

Sharif said that the “enemy” wants to take steps against the water treaty. He said, “For this, the government has decided that we will make our water storage.” He said that the government will manufacture “non-contact water storage capacity” using Diamer Dam and other resources. He said, “We will create this ability with our resources in the next few years. The National Disaster Management Authority has an important role in this.
