India and Pakistan exchanged the lists of civilian prisoners and fishermen in custody of each other, which continues the long-standing diplomatic practice. The exchange was made simultaneously through official diplomatic channels in New Delhi and Islamabad as per the bilateral agreement on Consular Access signed in 2008. According to the agreement, the two countries share these lists every two years and 1 July.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (Mea), India has shared the names of 382 civilian prisoners and 81 fishermen with Pakistan, who are currently in Indian custody, who have either been confirmed or believed to be Pakistani citizens. In turn, Pakistan has shared the details of 53 civilian prisoners and 193 fishermen kept in its custody, which have either been confirmed or believed to be Indians.

India pressurized for early release and consular access
The Government of India has reiterated its demand for early release of all Indian citizen prisoners and fishermen and their boats as well as their return, as well as the return of the missing Indian defense personnel, who are believed to be in Pakistan’s custody. Remandable, India has urged Pakistan to accelerate the release of 159 Indian prisoners who have already completed their sentence. Additionally, India has demanded immediate consular access to 26 civilian prisoners and fishermen in Pakistan’s custody, which is believed to be Indian citizens, but has not yet been accessed by Pakistani authorities. India has also emphasized the need for Pakistan to ensure the safety, safety and welfare of all Indians and Indian prisoners waiting for repatriation.
