Ravindra Chavan’s promotion is at a time when local body elections are to be held in the Mumbai Metropolitan Area (MMR), including prominent civil bodies like Thane and Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation, which are going to be held later this year.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday officially made a senior BJP leader and four -time MLA Ravindra Chavan to be appointed as the new president of Maharashtra Bharatiya Janata Party. Chavan was elected unopposed in the presence of Rijiju and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the BJP state office in Mumbai. Kiren Rijiju was appointed by the BJP for the selection of the new state president and the election in -charge.

Important appointment before MMR elections

Chavan, known for its organizational skills and ground connectivity at the ground level, is expected to lead the BJP’s campaign in these Shiv Sena-Bhutva areas. Devendra Fadnavis’s close aide and a major Maratha face in Thane district, Chavan is credited with expanding the BJP’s base in the region. He achieved his fourth term from Dombivali with a huge margin of more than 77,000 votes in the 2024 assembly elections.

From RSS roots to state leadership
Chavan started his political journey from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and worked as the President of the Bharatiya Yuva Morcha in 2002. He became a councilor in 2005, Chairman of Standing Committee in 2007 and MLA in 2009. He became the Minister of State in 2016 due to his close ties with Fadnavis and later took over the Public Works Department in Shinde -led government. He also served as the patron minister of several Konkan districts, helping the BJP to strengthen its base in the region, where it won 35 out of 39 seats in the 2024 assembly elections.
