Ravindra Chavan, a close aide of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, was unanimously elected the President of Maharashtra BJP on Tuesday. These elections are to be held before the Mumbai municipal elections. He replaced Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, who was in the post since August 2022. He became the 12th president of the party’s state unit. Chavan has played an important organizational role during BJP’s expansion in semi-urban areas like Karjat, Badlapur and Matheran. His performance gave him a place in the state cabinet and he was also made the patron minister of Palghar and Raigad districts.

After the division of 2022, around 50 former corporators have joined the camp.

Chavan, a prominent face of Thane district, started his political life in 2007, when he was elected councilor in Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation. Despite the Congress-NCP alliance being in power, he became the chairman of the Standing Committee. In 2009, he was nominated as a BJP candidate for the Dombivali assembly seat and won. In 2014, he was re-elected and served as the Minister of State to oversee various municipal corporations in the Mumbai metropolitan region including Kalyan-Dombivali, Meera-Bhandar and Panvel.
