Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said in its new annual booklet on Monday that India has more nuclear weapons than Pakistan, but Beijing’s strategic arsenal is larger than New Delhi. SIPRI has estimated the number of nuclear weapons in the Indian arsenal by January 2025, while the number was 172 a year ago, while Pakistan is estimated to have 170 nuclear weapons, which is equivalent to last year. In January 2025, China’s arsenal had 600 nuclear weapons, compared to 500 last year. SIPRI modifies its world nuclear force data every year based on new information. Its latest report came after India started Operation Sindoor on the morning of 7 May and after the Pahalgam terror attack, terrorists and military establishments were attacked in Pakistan and Pakistan -occupied Kashmir (PoK) in which 26 people were killed. This attack led to a four -day military confrontation with Pakistan which included fighter jets, missiles, drones, long distance weapons and heavy artillery.

The SIPRI report stated that Russia and the US have the largest arsenal in nine atomic-skilled countries (5,459 and 5,177). It states that although Pakistan remains the center of India’s nuclear preventive, India is giving more emphasis on long distance weapons capable of reaching goals in China. India had launched a step towards strengthening the country’s second indigenous nuclear -powered ballistic missile submarine, INS Arighat in Visakhapatnam last year, which was a step towards strengthening the country’s nuclear triangle (ability to launch strategic weapons from land, sea and air). The SIPRI report states that India’s nuclear weapons have been assigned to the mature atomic triangle of land -based missiles and SSBNs (ship submarine ballistic atoms or nuclear power -powered ballistic missile submarines).

The report states that for a long time it has been believed that India keeps its nuclear weapons separated from its launches in peace; However, the country’s recent steps towards keeping the missiles in cancer and patrolling sea -based preventive shows that India may move towards connecting some of its weapons with their launchers during peace. It states that India is making a fleet of four to six SSBN to develop the naval ingredient of its newborn nuclear triangle.
