Kerala: Contained Liberian ship containers flowing on the coast

After the drowning of the Liberian cargo ship in the Kerala offshore region, the containers kept in it are now flowing on the coast. The police gave this information on Monday. The coastal police said some containers have been found on the southern Kollam coast.

Police said that the total number of containers flowing on the coast is not yet known and the officials are working to handle the situation. Police has been deployed in all the affected areas.

According to reports, at least four containers have been seen on the coast of Kollam district so far. Authorities have urged people to stay away from the container and said that the ship had a total of 640 containers, of which 13 contains have dangerous materials.

The cargo ship overturned and drowned in the sea near the coast on Sunday, causing huge oil leakage. Alert has been issued throughout the state due to the flow of oil at a speed of about three kilometers per hour as it can affect the coastal region of ecologically sensitive Kerala.

According to the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), the tanks of the submerged ship had 84.44 MT diesel and 367.1 MT ‘Furnace Oil’. Officials said some containers had dangerous substances such as calcium carbide, which reacts with sea water and emit highly flammable acetylene gas. ICG is coordinating the work related to stopping pollution and monitoring the spread of oil leakage.
