A district court in Sonepat, Haryana, on Tuesday sent Dr. Ali Khan Mahmudabad, Associate Professor of Ashoka University to judicial custody by 27 May after May 27, a few days after his arrest at a social media post related to Army Operation Sindoor in Jammu and Kashmir. Dr. Mahmudabad, head of the Department of Political Sciences at Private University, was produced in the court after the end of the two -day police remand period. According to his lawyer Kapil Balyan, the police had demanded to extend the remand to seven days, but the court dismissed the petition and sent them to judicial custody. The professor was arrested on Sunday after two FIRs were lodged against him at Rai police station in Sonepat.

One complaint was filed by Haryana State Women’s Commission Chairman Renu Bhatia and the second complaint was filed by Yogesh Jatheri, General Secretary of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), which is the youth branch of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Both complaints have alleged that the posts of Mahmudabad were inflammatory, anti-national nature and weakens the sovereignty and integrity of the country. The disputed post X (formerly Twitter) was done and included comments on Operation Sindoor, which is a military operation targeting terrorist groups in Jammu and Kashmir. Critics of the post claimed that it is derogatory to the armed forces and provokes communal hatred. However, Mahmudabad defended its post and said that it was an appeal for peace and it is being misinterpreted.

His arrest has been widely condemned by academic circles, members of civil society and opposition parties, who have expressed concern over academic freedom and freedom of expression. The Faculty Association of Ashoka University issued a strict statement, calling the arrest a “well -planned oppression” and supported the professor, described him as a respected academist who has continued to work to promote communal harmony and critical investigation.
