Delhi Police has seized more than 1.7 lakh Pirated National Council of Educational Research and Training i.e. NCERT textbooks on Monday, May 19, while busting a large piracy racket. It costs more than Rs 2.4 crore.
Father-son pair included in fake book racket
In this case, Delhi Police has so far arrested 3 people, including a father-son pair. The arrested accused have been identified as Prashant Gupta (48) and his son Nishant Gupta (26), and Arvind Kumar.
Shahdara’s DCP Prashant Gautam said in a statement, ‘Prashant and Nishant had a shop, where the police found a large amount of pirated educational books. These books were being sold as a real NCERT testbook. The racket was exposed after a secret information received by the police on 16 May.
NCERT officials involved to check books
Earlier, information about selling pirated NCERT books from a shop on Mandoli road was received. Police raided and seized pirated books.
DCP Prashant said that NCERT officials were also included in the raid of Delhi Police, who examined the authenticity of books.
Subsequently, the police raided Anupam Sales and caught a large amount of pirated books. The shop was running a father-son pair, who was taken into custody.
DCP said, ‘A total of 27 pirated social science books of class 12 were found from the shop. There were fake NCERT logo and fake sign on books. NCERT officials confirmed after verification on the spot, that the material was fake and it is a violation of the Copyright Act.
Fake books were brought from a warehouse in Alipur, Delhi
During interrogation, the accused revealed that fake books were brought from a warehouse in Hiranki near Alipur, Delhi.
Based on this information, the police conducted raids and recovered about 1.7 lakh pirated books. Their price is more than Rs 2.4 crore.
The rented shop was by Arvind Kumar, which was being used to stock pirated books.
During interrogation, accused Prashant Gupta admitted that he had been running his shop for the last 20 years, in which Nishant attended 5 years ago.
DCP said that FIR was registered under Section 318 (fraud) and Copyright Act of BNS at MS Park Police Station. All the accused have been arrested and legal action is going on.
