6.3 magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan, at least five dead

A powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan late Sunday night, killing at least five people and injuring 143 others. A spokesperson of the country’s National Disaster Management Authority gave this information.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was 22 km west-southwest of Khullam, Afghanistan, at a depth of 28 km. The earthquake occurred at 12:59 pm on Sunday night local time.

Yusuf Hammad, a spokesman for Afghanistan’s disaster management agency, said the casualties were in Samangan province. He said most of the injured suffered minor injuries and were discharged from hospitals after initial treatment.

The impact of the earthquake was felt in many provinces of Afghanistan. According to the Taliban government, more than 2,200 people were killed when a 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistan border on August 31, 2025. Earlier on October 7, 2023, at least 4,000 people had died in the strong aftershocks following a 6.3 magnitude earthquake.
