The Philippines has accused China of illegally infiltrating an island called Roasul Reef located in the South China Sea. Rasul Reef Island has been the subject of regional dispute between the two countries. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) (PCG) on Wednesday confirmed the presence of more than 50 Chinese maritime militia (CMM) ships near Rozul Reef under the country’s specific economic zone (EEZ) in the Western Philippine Sea.

According to PCG spokesperson Commodore Je Taryella for West Philippine Sea related matters, two PCG ships and a monitoring aircraft were sent to the area located about 130 knots from Palavan, after receiving an intelligence report of suspected illegal activity. On reaching there, P.C.G. Confirmed that dozens of Chinese ships were scattered around the rock or gathered together. Tariella said that PCG personnel immediately challenged the ships on the radio, told them that they were working under the Philippine water and urged them to leave. The PCG cited the Alipin Maritime Area Act, the United Nations Conference on Sea Law (UNCLOS) and the 2016 Arbitration Award, which confirmed the Sovereign Rights of the Philippines on its EEZ and declared the huge claims of China in the region invalid.

Chinese ships were instructed to clarify their presence, stop entering into the herd and navigate according to international and domestic laws. However, PCG officials said no response was received from CMM ships. To collect further evidence, the PCG deployed the inflatable boats with rigid roses to go closer to the militia ships and documents their bow numbers, especially those who were anchored in the shallow parts of the rock.
