The Central Railway has informed the Bombay High Court that 453 people have died on railway tracks in the first five months of 2025. The Central Railway has filed this affidavit following the direction of the Bombay High Court. In the affidavit filed through advocate Anamika Malhotra, the Central Railway said that the main causes of deaths were encroachment, crossing tracks and falling from local trains. The data showed that in 2025, 293 people died while crossing the tracks, and 150 people died after falling from a moving train. Last year, i.e. in 2024, the death toll while crossing the track was 674, while 387 deaths occurred due to falling of the train.

A total of 782 people died in 2023 while crossing the tracks, while 431 people died due to falling from a moving train. This affidavit was filed on the direction of the court. The High Court sought a report after the incident in Mumbra on 9 June, in which eight passengers fell from two local trains passing by each other, resulting in five people. The Central Railway informed the court that a multi-disciplinary team has been formed to investigate the Mumbra incident and the investigation is still going on.

The team consists of a senior Divisional Safety Officer from Mumbai, Senior Divisional Security Commissioner, Senior Divisional Operations Manager, Senior Divisional Engineer (South) and Senior Divisional Electrical Engineer (Traction Rolling Stock Operations).
