3 children died despite rabies vaccine: Health Minister said- Vaccine should be investigated; Opposition said- corruption and negligence in health department

According to the Kerala government, 13 people died of rabies in the state till 2 May 2025.

Three children died of rabies despite installing anti-rabies vaccine in Kerala last month. State Health Minister Veena George said on Monday- There should be a quality check of the vaccine and only then the vaccine should be used.

On Monday, a 7-year-old girl died in Thiruvantapuram due to installation of anti-rabies vaccine. The girl was given all three doses of the vaccine. Earlier on 9 April, a 12 -year -old girl died in Pathanamthitta.

Earlier on April 29, the 5-year-old girl was killed after the anti-rabies vaccine. In all three cases, the victims had deep wounds on their heads and hands. On these incidents, the opposition has said that this is the negligence of the health department. Corruption is spread in the department.

Specialist committee formed to check for anti-rabies vaccine

Veena George said- The government formed an expert committee in 2022 to investigate the anti-rabies vaccine. This committee examined the blood samples of those who were vaccinated. Investigation revealed that the necessary antibodies were present in all the people.

The minister also said that the vaccine given in Hospitals in Kerala is investigated in a government lab located in Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh. Each vaccine batch is tested in the lab and is sent to Kerala only when found completely safe.

Opposition allegations- This health department’s negligence

On the deaths of anti-ribies vaccine, Leader of Opposition VD Satisan said- Three children died of rabies are a matter of concern. In the last five years in the state, 102 people died of rabies, out of which 20 people were vaccinated. Even after repeated deaths, the Health Department says that the vaccines are safe. Innocent children are being killed due to the negligence and corruption of the department.

Government data on anti-ribies vaccine

According to the Government of Kerala, people bitten by dogs-cats or other animals have been given 1,69,906 doses of anti-ribies vaccine. As of May 2 this year, there have been 13 deaths from rabies in the state.

The number of deaths confirmed in 2024 was 22 and the number of suspected deaths was 4. In 2023, there were 17 confirmed deaths and 8 suspected deaths in the state.
